Can I Get a Social Tariff on Broadband?

Yes, if you’re on a low income and receive certain government benefits, you may be eligible for a social tariff, a budget-friendly fixed broadband plan designed to keep you connected for less.
You may qualify if you receive:

  • Universal Credit,
  • Pension Credit,
  • Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA),
  • Employment and Support Allowance (ESA),
  • Income Support

Some providers may also include Personal Independence Payment (PIP) or Attendance Allowance.

Social tariffs include superfast speeds (30Mbps+), plenty for browsing, shopping, streaming, and video calls. Unlike most contracts, social tariffs won’t go up mid-way.

And don’t worry about quality because social tariffs use the same networks and infrastructure as regular broadband, just without perks.

What is Broadband?

Broadband is a high-speed internet connection that allows you to connect devices, including laptops, smartphones, smart TVs, and tablets, to the internet. This connection comes to your home through an Internet Service Provider (ISP) such as BT, Virgin Media, Sky, or Hyperoptic.

Compared with slow dial-up connections from the past, broadband delivers a faster, more dependable connection. Please note that speed and access availability depend on where you live; this is why Clarity Compare helps you check what deals we have available at your postcode quickly.

How Do I Find the Best Broadband Deals in My Area?

Not every broadband package is available in every area. For example, the UK has not pushed ultra-fast fibre broadband into every postcode, which is why you should check before switching.

It is easy to check where you live with our postcode checker:

  1. Enter your postcode and provider.
  2. Instantly check what deals are available in your postcode.
  3. Look at the available speeds, prices, and contract lengths visually on one page.

What Broadband Package Is Right For Me?

The best broadband package for you depends on how you use the internet and what extras you want.

Broadband-only:

  • Do not use a landline
  • Stream TV online (Netflix, iPlayer, YouTube)
  • Want a simple, inexpensive deal

Broadband + Phone

Suitable for homes that:

  • Still regularly use a landline
  • Rely on a phone line for broadband (ADSL/FTTC)
  • Don't need premium TV channels

Broadband + TV

Best for households with:

  • An interest in Sky Sports, TNT Sports, or Sky Atlantic
  • Wanting to have one single monthly bill
  • Not using a landline

Broadband + TV + Phone (+ Mobile)

An all-in-one package will provide:

  • Better value than buying items separately
  • One bill and one point of contact
  • Extra benefits such as cashback, gift cards, or discounts

What broadband package can I choose?

When you're trying to choose a broadband package, it is not just about internet access. It is common for many providers to combine broadband with other services to save you money, as well as keep you organised.

Common broadband package options

Broadband only – Offers you internet-only services. These are fast and reliable with no add-ons.

Broadband + Phone – Includes a landline with talk-time or plans

Broadband + TV + Phone- A popular all-in-one service.

Broadband + TV – Upgrades your plan with premium TV channels, rip-offs, catch-up and on-demand

Broadband + TV + Phone + Mobile – The best package from a major provider.

Why Choose a Bundle?

Choosing a broadband package that also features TV, phone, or mobile services can provide advantages:
Better value – Usually cheaper than buying each of those services independently.

One monthly bill – Makes it easier to pay your bills, as you only have one bill to pay each month.

Simple support – You only deal with one provider for everything.

What to Consider Before Switching?

Key Considerations When Getting a Broadband Deal

Selecting the right broadband isn't just about the cheapest price. There are a variety of factors to consider, including speed, contract duration, hidden charges, and extras.
Here is a checklist for what to check before committing:

1. Speed

Choose an appropriate speed for your household activities. If you stream HD content, work from home, game online, or others use the connection, consider a faster broadband package to avoid buffering and slowdowns.

2. Customer Service

Read reviews and scores. Customer service is key when there are issues like outages or if the speed is less than what was promised.

3. Budget

Ensure that the package fits in the monthly budget and offers good value for similar options. Don't forget installation costs and or new router costs; some providers waive these fees.

4. Length of Contract

Most contracts last 12, 18 and 24 months. Rolling or monthly contracts offer flexibility, but typically at a higher monthly price. Make sure the length of contract terms works for you, and what the procedure is for switching.

5. Price Increases

Broadband providers can increase prices during the contract period tied to Consumer Price Inflation (CPI). Starting January 2025, Ofcom rules will require Transparency on these increases.

6. Exit Charges

Exiting early can incur an exit charge, and sometimes, it can be the cost of the remaining period. However, if your provider is not meeting the minimum guaranteed speed according to Ofcom guidelines, you can escape paying for the exit charge.

7. Equipment

You may need to get new equipment with an upgrade, either a new router or a fibre installation, so check what is installed and if there are any additional costs associated with getting new equipment.

8. Perks and Rewards

Cashback, free technical gadgets, or gift cards can be entertaining, but remember these extras are worth little if you do not focus on the key essentials of speed, reliability and overall value.

How do I change my broadband provider?

After you’ve selected a deal, your new provider manages the switch, which includes contacting your current provider. Be sure to check exit fees and contract end dates.

You could upgrade to fibre, select a faster package, or reduce congestion by connecting with wires or getting an updated router.

Yes, many providers offer flexible student broadband deals with shorter contracts and at a lower price – ideal for shared houses.

VPN means Virtual Private Network, and it privately secures your online activity. It is useful if you commonly use public Wi-Fi in a work environment, or want to access something not offered in your region, for example.

This is wireless broadband connected through the 5G mobile network. It is a strong substitute for fixed-line broadband in places nearby with no fibre.
